In addition to being one America’s greatest writers, Ernest Hemingway was perhaps the prototype for that dashing Dos Equis creation, “The World’s Most Interesting Man.”  His was a life filled with romance and adventure, from World War I to Lost Generation 1920’s Paris, from safaris in Africa to fishing the Gulf Stream, from bullfights to covering the Spanish Civil War and World War II, to chasing German U-Boats off the Cuban coast, Hemingway lived life to the fullest.  Hemingway’s lust for life also extended to food and drink, as he and his characters were never far from that good café.  He is quoted as saying, “Don’t bother with churches, government buildings or city squares, if you want to know about a culture, spend a night in its bars.”

If you’re a fan of Hemingway and a well-made drink, we recommend that you instead spend an afternoon with us for an event titled, “To Have and Have Another – A Hemingway Cocktail Companion.”  Based on the newly-released book of (nearly) the same name, this is a scholarly but entertaining look at the rum drinks featured in the life and works of Ernest Hemingway, hosted by the book’s author, Philip Greene.  His book is a cocktail lover’s guide to the life and works of Hemingway, featuring biographical info, anecdotes, as well as general background about the drinks, bars and cafes, and related folklore.  It contains 55 easy-to-follow recipes, excerpts from Hemingway’s prose, letters and biographies, and is both fun and informative.  Mr. Greene is one of the founders of the Museum of the American Cocktail, and has been a Hemingway buff for over 30 years.  As such, he is uniquely qualified to bring his book and this special event to you.  It will examine the cocktails he enjoyed while living in Paris during the Lost Generation ‘20s, in Key West during the ‘30s, and Cuba for the balance of his life.

 

Mr. Greene’s event is co-sponsored by Papa’s Pilar Rum, a new line of amazing new rums created by the Hemingway Rum Company, and Laird’s, makers of America’s oldest spirit, Laird’s Applejack.

Hurricane Hole Restaurant, 5130 Overseas Hwy 1, Key West, starting at 5:30 pm

You will be welcomed with a Rums of Puerto Rico cocktail prepared by the world famous mixologist. Then you will enjoy another island libation prepared by another star mixologist. After that you will judge a 4 course dinner prepared by both star chefs competing side by side (you will be served total of 8 dishes) paired with worldly wines. Cook-off competitors: Chef Adrianne Calvo of Chef Adrianne’s Vineyard Restaurant and Wine Bar in Miami, the star of Maximum Flavor on NBC, and the local Celebrity Chef Tim Hadley of the famous Hurricane Hole.
